Dr. Robyn Silverman, the creator of the Powerful Words Character Development program, has produced an excellent infographic depicting how martial arts training benefits girls.

This is why we believe in the value of our Powerful Word character development curriculum here at The 4th Degree Martial Arts Academy. We are proud to be a member of the Powerful Words schools nationwide.

If you have a daughter, this is great information that is so on target for the kinds of challenges girls face in today's media influenced world.

The study of martial arts is a great personal development tool for both boys and girls but don't just take our word for it. Try it.

Shihan Yocham is the director of the Austin Division of the TOGKF and has been actively studying and teaching Okinawa GoJu Ryu Karate since 1989.

It's always a pleasure to have Shihan come in to conduct a traditional karate class at our school and show us Tae Kwon-Do stylists how to broaden our perspective and add to our martial arts skills. His class was not only rigorous and spirited but Shihan Yocham brought his usual wit and humor to lighten us all up as we we tried to match his physical technique and tireless energy. The 100 pushups we did in class as part of our spirit competition between instructors and students were great fun and we hope to see Shihan Yocham teach another class soon.

<![CDATA[How To Talk to Your Children About Today's Tragic School Shooting]]>Fri, 14 Dec 2012 22:28:50 GMThttp://www.the4thdegree.com/1/post/2012/12/how-to-talk-to-your-children-about-todays-tragic-school-shooting.htmlAs a parent, it's so hard to comprehend events such as today's tragic school shooting that took place in Connecticut. As parents, educators and leaders we have to come to terms with the initial feelings of disbelief and feelings of helplessness over our inability to predict or prevent these things from happening. It becomes more important to help our children manage information they may be exposed to and to do so in an age appropriate way.

At The 4th Degree Martial Arts, we are fortunate to have Dr. Robyn Silverman provide us with a quick resource to use if we have to talk to children about today's difficult and sad event. Dr. Silverman is a nationally recognized child and teen development expert and creator of the Powerful Words character development program, an important component of martial arts training that we employ at our school.

We at The 4th Degree will keep all of those families affected today by this senseless shooting in our prayers.

This is a link to Dr. Robyn Silverman's blog post to help all parents talk to their children about today's shooting if they have to.

Also, here is another very insightful and helpful article shared by Jason Silverman, martial artist and CEO of the Powerful Words Character Development program
